I am realist. Even in my wildest dreams, I still have my feet planted firmly on the ground – so while I want to say that seeing the CHANEL couture collection at New York Fashion Week was the realization of a life long dream (because we all know how much I love and covet all things CHANEL), the truth is, I never dreamed of attending a CHANEL presentation because I never believed it was in the realm of possibility that I might find myself on the invitation list for such a fabulous event. When I did receive an invitation, my reaction was somewhere between gaping in disbelief and jumping for joy. I have received invitations from CHANEL before, it’s true, but to events in Vancouver, a city where the luxury fashion market is booming but that, at the same time, is not exactly known for having a population with great style – this is the birthplace of the yoga-pants-as-pants movement, after all; New York is worlds away from the humble Canadian city where I spend most of my time. When it came to getting dressed to visit the most stylish office in New York City, however, I knew exactly what I wanted to wear – unlike some other shows, where I didn’t quite know how my aesthetic would fit in with the look of the brand. CHANEL epitomizes classic style while continually innovating, and, more importantly, the house is the arbiter elegantarium when it comes to all black everything outfits. My outfit came together in my head almost instantly, starting with an effortless lace shift dress from Gentlefawn. Choosing accessories has never been easier – it might border on cliche, but I reached for my CHANEL handbag and elegant Lady of the Pearl necklace from CC Lifestyles almost without thinking, because nothing says CHANEL like quilting, a chain strap and a long string of fresh water pearls. It’s hard to describe the experience of not only seeing CHANEL couture garments in person, but actually being able to interact with them – to feel the fabrics, open the pockets and examine the exquisite beading up close. But I can say without a doubt that it was the most glamourous thing I have ever been lucky enough to do before lunchtime; my admiration and respect for the brand’s incredible, timeless creations continues to deepen with each passing year. And while I may not be a head-in-the clouds, anything-is-possible kind of dreamer, I will never be less than in awe of Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel, whose determination and fearlessness in the face of obstacles allowed her to found an enduring design house that continues to inspire women around the world every season. After we left the CHANEL showroom, I felt ready to start dreaming bigger.

I can only imagine how the Chanel presentation was for you in terms of dreams becoming reality! So happy for you! And that dress is EVERYTHING. I may need to grab one for NYE…

    • Thanks Melissa! Honestly, I can’t recommend the dress enough, for something that looks so pretty it is shockingly comfortable – post-Chanel, I switched into flats and hiked halfway across the subway, then back again, and I was never sorry for a second that I didn’t have something more practical on!

And your day sounds absolutely amazing… the idea of seeing the pieces up close and experiencing the brand via a presentation, ah, so much fun, totally dreamy and I too would leave feeling completely inspired! xo
