I love stretch jeans, don’t get me wrong. I have been devoted to skinny jeans with two percent elastane since my late teens. But a few months ago, I opened my jeans drawer, which as always was full to bursting, and thought to myself, None of these look like they’re actually made of denim. It was a strange thought to have, and an even harder one to articulate, but what it comes down to is that elastane, even a small amount of it, changes the way jeans look. It makes denim less stiff and unforgiving, which is wonderful, but it also robs it of the tough, gritty, this will last forever look that makes it such a unique and iconic fabric. And so, as it so often does, my search for the perfect pair of non-stretch jeans, which I knew full well mostly likely existed only in my imagination, began in earnest. It took me to countless vintage stores, where I tried on endless pairs of old Levi’s that weren’t really quite old enough to be what I was looking for – it’s shocking how many vintage stores are selling Levi’s from 1998 as alleged vintage; I’m pretty sure I tried on a few pairs of pants that I had tried on in high school, when they were new. When I got desperate, I went so far as to text my mom to see if she had any old jeans in her closet, but the perfect pair of jeans was nowhere to be found. Since I am clearly wearing a pair of non-stretch jeans in these photos, you must all know by now that this story has a happy ending – and like so many of my fashion stories this year, the happy ending came in the form of a few hours of procrastination on the REVOLVE site, where I stumbled upon a pair of jeans that ticked all of my wishlist boxes (and then some, since they come in a petite version, an option I never expect to be available.) When they arrived, I quickly remembered why I love stretch denim – the first attempt at putting on a new pair of non-stretch jeans is nothing short of a workout, but that stiffness is, I kept reminding myself as I was wriggling and contorting my way into them, a big part of what makes them look so good. And they do look good, especially now that the denim has softened up a bit. But non-stretch denim still isn’t for everyone – it required some serious flexibility to put these jeans on for the first time, an experience that left me with serious admiration for generations of women who came before me and had no choice but to break in every pair of jeans they ever owned. That said, if you’re interested in trying the trend, REVOLVE has some amazing pairs of non-stretch jeans, and (almost) the whole site is going to be on sale from November 1st to 3rd – you’ll get 20% off your entire order with the code 20OFF, so if you’ve been considering a non-stretch denim purchase (or anything else from REVOLVE, for that matter), next week is your chance! Happy shopping!

YES! I have found myself thinking this a lot lately. Especially since I work for a company that prides itself on being a heritage denim brand. I’ve found a few pairs in our store that are real true denim. The stiffness that I was missing. I still love my jeggings too, but my straight leg blue traditional denim have become a new staple.

Now that I think about it, it’s been a long time since I’ve owned a pair of elastin free jeans myself. You make them look so chic and effortless – I may be inspired to get myself a pair.

Buying jeans always proves to be a challenge Cee. Especially specialty ones. I love the pair you’re wearing! They look great. I also love that jacket and your Celine bag. Great outfit.

I suppose the presence of spandex in jeans does inherently change their look, but I don’t think I’d want to give it up. I can’t imagine breaking in a pair of pure cotton skinny jeans after having been spoiled with 2% to 8% of luxurious elastine for the whole of my adult life. I will however, give you the look. Those do look so good on you.
