Special thanks to Laduree Canada for hosting us

I leave a little bit of my heart in every city I visit – it’s hard not to. But Paris… Paris was my first love, and when I can’t be there, which is far more often than I would like, I look for little bits of it wherever I can find them. It was no surprise to anyone that I was over the moon when Laduree opened on Robson Street in Vancouver last spring – if my instagram feed is anything to go by, I’ve been eating a pretty steady diet of macarons, macarons and more macarons ever since. (Guilty as charged.) Now, I’m saying good-bye to another place I have loved, albeit not for as long, nor as deeply, as the French capital – Vancouver. The city that I chose based on a degree program available at the local university and virtually no other considerations has now been my home for ten years. While I know that this is the right moment to move on, that doesn’t mean I didn’t want to make my departure as fabulous – and, admittedly, Parisian, as possible. Before Ian and I boarded the first of many flights that will eventually have us landing in Paris this Thursday morning, Lyndi and I got together for one last Vancouver celebration: a tea party in the Laduree tea salon. It’s a place we have visited often since it opened – we have a shared soft spot for their delectable (and utterly adorable) madeleine cookies, not just their macarons – so it seemed like the perfect location for a celebration of the partnership we’ve had over the past few years. While I am partial to a good champagne toast, there’s nothing quite like clinking tea cups and snacking on perfectly pink sweets to fete a wonderful friendship. The hardest things to give up when you leave a place – and I have done quite a lot of leaving in my lifetime, so I have a fair amount of knowledge on this subject – is the time you spend with people close to you. I am, at once, lucky and unlucky to have so many friends the all over the world who make it hard for me to spend a day without missing someone, and while I’m on the point of being reunited with many people I love, I’ve also said good-bye to many this week. But really, it wasn’t so much good-bye as see you soon.

  1. This was such a lovely goodbye (well, see you later) note to the city that’s been your home for a decade – reading this reminded me of how I felt when I left New Haven over close to 7 years.

Nothing can compare to the time spent with your friends, old and new, and this looks like the most delightful send off. I hope you have safe travels, and I can’t wait to hear about all your adventures.

A good place to celebrate indeed ! I must admit I prefer other of their goodies to their macaroons.
