Just in case anyone wanted proof that I don’t dislike colour, these photos from Burano should be it. (I think many people wear colours beautifully; I love red doors on white houses and bright tulips. Just not for myself.) You might remember that we didn’t love Venice as much as we expected we would. And so, despite the fact that I am petrified of boats, I was glad to board the early morning vaporetto towards Burano and Mazzorbo, two of the islands in the Venetian lagoon.

To be honest, we might not have visited Burano had it not been for our lunch date on Mazzorbo. As a chef, Ian loves to try the best of local cuisine, so we had made a reservation at Venissa months in advance. That lunch proved to be the best meal we had during our time in Venice, but beyond that, it was such a welcome change to escape the chaotic bustle of the city for a day. Burano is certainly a tourist hub, too, but if you arrive early, you might be lucky enough to have the colourful streets almost to yourself for a few minutes before the crowds arrive! Even when visitors do arrive for the day, the ambience in Burano is much more relaxed than Venice. We had a really lovely morning there, just wandering around and taking it all in.

I fell in love with Italy on my first visit years ago. Aside from Venice, I’ve never been anywhere in the country that I didn’t adore. That includes Burano and its neighbour, Mazzorbo. The two islands are connected by the most charming little bridge. If we ever visit again, I would love to stay on Mazzorbo, in the Venissa hotel. But there are so many Italian destinations we still have to visit. (Verona, Florence, Bologna, the Amalfi Coast and Milan all come to mind, among others.) Given that, it’s hard to say when our return to Burano might be. But I’m always hopeful…!

We’ve spent this weekend unpacking boxes and boxes (and boxes) in our new apartment. There’s still so much work to do, but before we continue, we’re off to Riding Mountain National Park for a few days of family fun – I would say relaxation, but let’s face it, family fun and relaxation don’t really go hand in hand. (Sorry mom, but you know it’s true.) What are your plans for this week?

  2. Yay, my fave Sezane blouse – love it so much!! And love these beautiful buildings… the colours are absolutely dreamy! Plus, I honestly don’t think I can imagine colour on you! Never say never, I guess. But, my days of colour are far and few between as well. There’s just something about the monochromatic hues… they always draw me in! And enjoy your long weekend + excited (as I’m sure you’re too) for you to be all settled in at your new home! xo

I actually have had Burano on my travel list for a while now. I’m glad it’s as charming as I thought it would be.

  4. That looks like such a magical place to visit – I’m going to have to remember this when we plan our next vacation (we’re thinking a trip to Italy sometime next year or the year after, depending on when we feel confident enough to travel with baby in tow).

The contrast between your black and white clothing and the colors of Burano’s homes is great!
It is really a magic place!
    Thank you for sharing!

  6. Cee, I’m like you. Color can hardly be found in my wardrobe. That’s why I supplement it in my makeup and everything else. But even that is fading. LOL

I don’t blame you for wanting to wear neutrals over color. Color can feel tricky and regrettable (hello, I wore tights in every color of the rainbow for many years and those are not the blog posts I choose to look back on for inspiration!) But our world is beautiful in color and I love how those bright buildings reflect in the water and not a single one feels out of place or style. Glad you enjoyed your time and your meal there, and yes, so many places in Italy to see….
