I don’t think of myself as someone who follows trends. Granted, when I was a teenager, I was just as obsessed with crop tops and platforms as my friends. But when I left high school, I left following trends behind in favour of wearing exactly what I love. I prefer classic cuts and neutral colours, so I never expected what I like would align with what is on trend.

And then, well… and then it was 2017. This has been an improbable year in many ways, so I can’t see any reason why it shouldn’t be an improbable year in my closet, too. Suddenly, I’ve found myself coveting garments that can only be described as trendy. Bell sleeve tops. Denim skirts. Kimonos. Culottes. Mules. Part of this, undoubtedly, is that the 90s are back in a big way. I lived through the 90s, but I was in elementary school and junior high. Now, as an adult, I have the opportunity to wear all the clothes I lusted after, but couldn’t afford on a babysitting money budget, back then. And the ones I hated, but would have embraced as a younger, more easily influenced person? (Chokers and Doc Martens, I’m looking at you.) I’m mature enough to give them a miss.

When I put this outfit on for the first time last weekend, I almost laughed out loud at my reflection in the mirror. My nine-year-old-self would have died of happiness if she had been allowed to wear it. (Although I admit, she probably would have wanted the top to be purple.) But despite the fact that my younger self would have loved this look, I feel very adult wearing it, which is a big deal, because let’s face it, the worst thing when you’re in your thirties is getting dressed in an outfit full of trendy pieces only to realise you look like you’re trying to pass for twenty-five. Seriously – I want to be twenty-five again as much as I want to be fifteen again. And I don’t want to re-wear any of the trends I loved at those ages, either.

I have no intention of embracing trends any more than I ever have – by next season, I suspect I’ll be back to dressing exactly the way I like while a new set of trends takes over the fashion world. But I have to admit, it’s been fun to see my style and trends align, even if only for a short time.

  3. I’m not a trendy girl either Cee, but that top looks absolutely fabulous on you. I also love that straw bag. So chic! You look beautiful.

  4. I practically lived in chokers and Docs in junior high and high school so I was weirdly thrilled to see those back trends – but I totally feel the same as you (although it is nice when your style preferences and a trend align, even if it is short lived).

I’ve been listening to a number of pieces on NPR about how our brains work, and when it comes to what we like, often times mere exposure is the biggest influence. So when you mention that trends you were influenced by in your younger years coming back again, you like them quite possibly just because you’ve been exposed to them a lot.

That said, I do like them to. They are fun, and what is wrong with having a little fun? I was all about bell sleeves in high school and when I first saw them back I wasn’t sure I’d get on board, but now I know if I see the right top, I’m definitely going to buy it.

Its funny how look at things differently as time goes by – I’ve had denim skirts and kimonos hanging in my closet forever and have them because I love them it’s certainly nice when they’re suddenly back on trend, as its a good excuse to wear them.

  8. Like you, I have my adult style pretty much in place and it doesn’t change much. But I love pairing some trendy pieces with my typical “uniform.” There is something to be said for keeping things fresh and fun without come a fashion victim. I think you did that well. And I love that top on you!

I stopped buying trendy pieces a few years ago and honestly, my closet and purse are happier for it. But it is nice to have something you own be trendy! I really love that top on you. The sleeves look pretty amazing,

  10. You & me both, I rarely feel like I follow trends and tend to stick to my tried & trued favourites. I’d like to mix that up a little this fall, but haha, probably won’t happen! 😉 When it comes to style? I’ve become pretty predictable. But love seeing you break out and feel like all the items are still very you and you very much pull them off. On that note, happy Tuesday (could have sworn it was Monday, haha) and my wine is already chilling for Wednesday’s Skype date. YAY!! xo
