Chicago took me by surprise. Before I left, a number of people asked me why I was visiting the city and I couldn’t exactly put my finger on the reason. My expectations, I suppose, were low. I arrived early – very early, almost before sunrise – on a Wednesday morning and rode the rickety ‘L’ train into the city, where I circled the block in a futile effort to find my bus stop before a cab driver took pity on me and offered to take me the rest of the way to my destination. I was just settling into the car when we turned onto Wabash Avenue – all at once, Trump Tower, the Wrigley Building and the Tribune building came into view, framed by fresh flowers blooming in a sidewalk garden. And I knew why I was in Chicago. The city’s architecture continued to astound me day after day, from the marble majesty of the Carbide & Carbon Building on North Michigan Avenue to the John Hancock tower, a monolithic 95-storey structure just steps from our hotel, the Raffaello. I spent my whole trip looking up, up, up. It’s hard to be bored in Chicago; a visit to the Art Institute alone could take up more than a full day, if you let it. And beyond the tourist attractions – seeing the new baby penguin make his first entrance into the penguin enclosure at Shedd Aquarium, still tiny and fuzzy and slightly confused, was a highlight – there is the shopping. I spent more time in the shops along Michigan Avenue than I dare to admit, and brought home a number of wearable souvenirs to prove it! You won’t go hungry, either – I indulged in deep dish pizza more than once; the version at Pizzeria Uno, with spinach, mozzarella and marinara sauce, was a particular favourite that I find myself craving as I type this. By the time I was on my way back to the airport, I was already thinking about when I could plan my next visit to the city, because there’s so much I still want to see and do – and okay, eat – there.

Chicago m’a surprise.
