I’m talking about jeans, of course. When it comes to the boyfriend variety, it seems to be a neverending struggle for me. I spent years – not what felt like years, but literal years, from early 2011 through mid-2103 – searching for the perfect pair of boyfriend jeans. I finally found them at Madewell, and for a period of time I wore them to death. But then I found myself unable to think of any new ways to style them – since I only own one pair, the number of new outfit possibilities dwindled far more quickly than when I add a new pair of skinny jeans to my collection, since I already have so many of those. I wondered if maybe boyfriend jeans might have been one of those rare passing fashion fads that actually caught my eye. But boyfriend jeans are still everywhere, it’s just me struggling to find ways to fit them into my daily uniform. Being petite makes this particularly challenging, for one utterly silly but totally true reason: no matter how often I put my boyfriend jeans on, they never make me look like the statuesque women whose boyfriend jean looks I admire on Pinterest. They aren’t magic, no matter how much I want them to be (and I do, I really do.) It was, in fact, one of those statuesque women who inspired me to give boyfriend jeans a second chance – when we were all dressed up for the opening of the Prada store earlier this year, a tall woman wandered into the boutique wearing a navy blue coat, boyfriend jeans, YSL Jane sandals and a gorgeously messy chignon. The look was pure perfection and would not for one second have been the same on my small frame, but I can dream, and I did. Inspired, it only seemed to make sense to turn to my favourite denim brand, Mavi, for my next pair of boyfriend jeans. I’m still sorting out how I want to wear them – and wishing I’ll have a growth spurt before the next time I go to put them on – but while I come up with new looks, this outfit has been on repeat. Since I’m looking for inspiration, tell me – how do you wear your boyfriend jeans?
