Date night is a bit of a foreign concept to me. Ian is a chef, which comes with a lot of amazing perks – I can’t remember the last time I had to make anything more complex than toast for myself – but also means that he works long hours, evenings and at night, through pretty much every weekend and holiday of the year. Since I’m lucky enough to work from home, we do see each other, but the free time in our schedules mostly overlaps on weekend mornings, which means we rarely go out for more than coffee and a pastry. I’m not complaining – we both love what we do, even if the hours can get a little crazy at times. (Okay, all the time.) But the weekly date nights that many couples seem to go on just aren’t part of our reality. So it was a lovely treat for us to be able to spend a weekday evening together at the Opus Hotel in Yaletown. He bought me flowers. I had an excuse to wear my new Christian Louboutin pumps. We went to dinner at a restaurant (!) – I’m still dreaming of the cauliflower risotto at La Pentola. Seriously. It was delicious. I have to admit, I could get used to the whole date night thing – although I doubt I would ever be able to stay awake later than nine pm after all that excitement!
