January is the start of the year, but to me, September feels like a new beginning. After months of lazy days in the sun, I am motivated and ready to get back to work, whatever work might be in a given year. I love the combination of cooler temperatures and sunny skies; the ability to pair my favourite sweaters with open-toed shoes never gets old.

In September, I regain my inspiration. I pick up old projects again and get back to work, giving myself a break for neglecting them no matter how long it’s been. That’s not something I can’t readily do the rest of the year – just give myself a break – but in September, somehow, it’s possible. In this month, a lot of things become surprisingly possible.

Perhaps most significantly, in September I feel more satisfied with my life than I do in any other month of the year. It doesn’t matter if I have to spend every single day at my desk working. I’m not thrilled about that every second of every day, I admit. But I can manage it in a way that feels much less like a trial than it does in February when the skies outside my window are moody and grey. That satisfaction stops me from seeking external validation in the form of new shoes and adorable stacking rings. I have not shopped this month. At all.

Okay, I admit – I replaced a beauty product. Maybe two. But those were replacements, not additions. I have relied on my existing wardrobe quite happily this month. And in fact, I’ve found myself marveling at just how much I love the clothes I own. There are so many outfits we haven’t even photographed, I thought to myself the other day. I won’t need to buy anything new for ages. Sometimes, I surprise myself most of all.

This season, I have different silhouettes on my mind. I want to play more with shapes and tailoring. And I want to rely less on the sweater-jeans-and-heels variations that have so long made up my fall and winter outfits. But September is nearly over, and it’s hard to know if I’ll manage to hold onto this feeling of inspiration when October comes. Since the weather will cool and the days will shorten, it might be a challenge. For now, I’m clinging to it. It’s still September, and September is my favourite.

Because I’m always curious, tell me – how do you feel about September?

The silhouette of this outfit looks great on you!

September’s always been my favourite time of the year for a host of reasons: my birthday, our dating and wedding anniversary, the cooler temperatures, the changing leaves, the excuse to indulge in all things cozy.

I’ve never cared for September, I still hate the ‘back to school’ feeling even though I’ve long since been out of school. I can’t stand how quickly it gets dark out, and how the weather flip-floping from boiling hot to freezing cold usually results in my coming down with a cold. I wish I could adopt your mentality, or at the very least, your resolve to embrace new silhouettes for the season.
