I wanted to start 2018 with something magical. And I can’t think of anything more magical than a desert sunrise – except perhaps, a Parisian sunrise, but let’s face it, I’ve done that a thousand times before.

I am a morning person, as it turns out. It’s not something that I planned on or wanted, particularly – certainly not something I resolved to become, because resolutions, at the start of the new year or otherwise, are not my thing. It just happened. I’ve made my peace with rising early because morning, especially sunrise, is the most beautiful time of day. In the past year, I’ve seen the sunrise on top of Acropolis Hill in Athens and on the Trocadero with the Eiffel Tower in view. But, improbably, I loved the sunrise outside of Las Vegas best of all.

I discovered Seven Magic Mountains on instagram. I scarcely remember how I knew where to go on my travels before the app came along, but I suppose I probably just walked around and saw what there was to see like a normal person. And I suppose that, like a normal person, I probably missed out on a lot of places I would have loved. The truth is, I still do. But I am more willing than ever, now, to travel off the beaten path to discover something wonderful. And Seven Magic Mountains was absolutely worth the trip, particularly at sunrise.

Don’t get me wrong – it wasn’t even six am, because desert sunrises happen unreasonably early. I was bleary-eyed and freezing cold, because the desert is only actually warm when the sun is out. But I frolicked and chased rainbows and got an incredible amount of sand in my impractical shoes and it was perfect.

I wanted to start the year with these photos because the longer I look at them, the more deeply I understand that they embody what I want 2018 to be. Spontaneous. Sometimes impractical. Full of adventure. And memorable.

I was thinking by the way ” isn’t she cold” as it turns out you were 😀 And sand in shoes is my biggest fear 😀

  3. Happy 2018, Cee!! Feeling hopeful for the new year and ready to start fresh! Especially after last years bumpy finish. And SO ready to go to this beautiful spot, take all the photos and adventure. Love these captures and love the all black outfit you picked. As for being a morning person? Right there with ya! Mind you, I usually like to keep to myself at that hour, but I do love to wake up early, take the day in and get a head start. Wishing you all the best for 2018 year, friend!!! xo
