I wasn’t kidding when I said, “I hope you all like seeing the inside of my apartment,” because here we are back again today – but in the bedroom this time. Our bedroom was the first room we focused on in our new home. The reason for that was simple; our bed frame broke just before we left Vancouver, so we left it behind. That meant we spent the first weeks back in Winnipeg searching for the perfect bed frame for our new space… and the first weeks in our new home sleeping on our sofa bed while we waited for it to arrive. (Moving is always an adventure…!)

The bed frame, which we got from Structube, proved absolutely worth the wait. Of all the pieces of furniture we’ve acquired in the past six months, and there have been a lot of them because our new apartment is double the size of our old one, it is probably my favourite. This is the first home we’ve had where I’ve given much thought to our bedroom decor. We don’t use the bedroom for anything but sleep, so it often becomes a decor afterthought – as long we have a bed, we’re happy. Or so I thought. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how much more I love our bedroom now that the way it looks is more in line with my style.

We moved to our new apartment in July last year. And I am totally aware that I have only shared the smallest sneak peeks of our space so far. It’s not even my perfectionist tendencies that are getting in the way, surprisingly. The truth is, we’re so far from finished the epic project we’ve undertaken with this apartment and while it’s already majorly improved, I’m holding out until we’re closer to finished our renovations to share what we’ve done. I have a set of “before” photos from when we bought the place and revealing the difference will be… dramatic, to say the least.

And so, for now, I give you the corner of our bedroom. (A little peek at my office has popped up, too.) I admit we’ve made some small changes even to this space since we took these photos. The new, matching end tables we ordered arrived, so my beloved marble side table moved back to my office where it belongs. It’s all a work in progress. And while I sometimes lament the fact that we’re constantly moving our furniture, for the first time in my life, I’m really excited about the space we live in and the potential we have to make it our own. So the home tour can wait. And I don’t really mind.

Since this is my first time doing a major home makeover, I’m curious… Have you every completely redone a home? What was the experience like for you?

  1. I can’t wait to see more of your home – I imagine it’s amazing.

We basically redid our entire condo in the first two years of living there. When we moved in, everything was painted beige and all the cupboards were dark cherry wood, as was the wood floor on the main floor. The rest was carpeted in a stained beige.

We repainted all three floors (every single room), pulled up all the carpeting, installed new laminate flooring on two floors (and the three stair ways that connect those floors), put new lino down on the third and final floor, installed new sinks and countertops in all 4 bathrooms, retiled the fireplace, installed a new kitchen countertop and sink, had all the cupboards in the bathrooms and kitchen painted, and installed new light fixtures in all the bathrooms, the kitchen, the dining room, and the two bedrooms. We were lucky in that we had originally planned to do a lot of things ourselves (and were dreading it) but then we came into an inheritance and, having repaid all our student loans already and no other big expenses on the horizon, we decided to get most of the work done by a contractor. We also hired the father of a friend of mine so our contractor experience was a really lovely, productive one. Basically the majority of the work got done in about 2 months (during which the house was a total disaster zone) and then we spent another 2-3 months doing all the fun decorating things. We live in an area where new condos are going up like every month so it’s unlikely we’ll ever get much of a profit when we sell this place but I sort of don’t care because it’s absolutely the most perfect home I could imagine for the time that we are in and, as mentioned, the money we put into redoing the place didn’t really come from our earnings/savings.

  2. A girl after my own heart. I LOVE all things related to the home and I’m so, so excited to see yours! All the sneak peeks you’ve shown have been soooo gorgeous and so swoon worthy. Happy for you guys! And there really is nothing better than making a home yours / putting your individual stamp on it. As for us? We’ve bought twice, and each of our homes (as you know) have been new. But lately, I’ve been dreaming of finding something a little older and gutting / renovating the whole thing. We’ll see! In any case, happy Friday my friend and can’t wait for our phone date!!!

  3. How exciting! I’ve always wanted to completely remodel a place and it was something I envisioned for the longest of times but these days with house prices the way they are where I live it ends up cheaper to get something on the newer side. I haven’t lost all hope though hehehe!

Looks like such a relaxing room – the lighting particularly looks like it’s great. Can’t wait to see more of the house.

I moved into a new place last year and have been having so much fun decorating. It is a small space so I’ve been making it cosy and homely with cushions, throws and rugs.

Oh yes, I have redone so many homes I lost counting.
Having a low budget is kind of discouraging when you are looking for a home. I’ve lived in lots of apartments that were just plain horrible and I had to make them somewhat looking good from scratch.
This makes your creative juices pumping so I guess that’s a plus 😀
I adore your gorgeous bedroom, would have loved to see more from your home

  6. I love your designer book collection Cee. I did a full home remodel, gutting and all. I took one room at a time. It took about 2 years. I changed the scope of each room. I wasn’t using each to it’s fullest, so I wanted to change that. Now, I’m filling rooms in. Awaiting my new couch from Joybird. They are special order and just finished it. Remodeling is both tiring and exhilarating.

I like what I can see of the bed, totally worth the wait !
I have never really re done the entire home, because I never got to finishing it the first time around !
We lived in a 90 square meter that was totally done and then moved to a 150 square meter apartment.
We began working on the second apartment and it was just never ending. It’s been ten years and I am just going back to upholster the old stuff. It seems like something need to be done all.the.time. Also doing it all at the same time is not probable because of the investment…
