The winter cold has been a bit of them around here lately – see exhibit a and exhibit b – so it seems appropriate that, after complaining that I can’t go outside regularly or wear my favourite clothes, I find something positive to say about winter. It really isn’t all bad… or so I keep telling myself. (I think if I repeat it often enough, I might eventually believe it.)

In an effort to embrace winter, at least a little, I have been on the lookout for fun local winter events. Which is how I stumbled upon Ice Castles. I have fond memories of visiting ice sculpture shows when I was little. And I will grant that what people did with blocks of ice and picks was, without a doubt, impressive. But my memories paled in comparison to the reality of Ice Castles, a veritable village made of packed ice and snow, complete with a fountain and an ice slide.

Admittedly, Ice Castles initially appealed to me because of the photo opportunities it offered. (I had visions of looking like Audrey Hepburn at the beginning of Charade because as I have often said, I am not particularly practical… or realistic.) But we got lucky; the weather warmed up and the sun came out for our visit last weekend, so we were able to enjoy the experience without stopping every five minutes to consider how much longer we could stand to be out in the cold. I was even able to take my gloves off once or twice (!) to take photos. (We got a lot more than just these five, but I’m saving them for later in the season when I will surely be in need of inspiration to remind myself that winter is long, but it isn’t so terrible.)

Next on my winter to-do list is skating… but that will require me to find a pair of skates. (I haven’t owned any for over a decade.) So it remains to be seen if it will actually happen. But I did make it to Ice Castles. And I think these photos prove that winter can look pretty good – at least in pictures.

  1. They do the Ice Castles here and I’m sad because this was the first year I haven’t gone (I was hoping to take Eleanor but it’s just been too cold here to have her outside for longer than 20 minutes or so), so I love seeing your photos and reading about your visit. And I also LOVE the all black outfit you wore – so perfect against the white background.

Wow, that really is quite an impressive sight – and a fun reason to get out in the winter is a good one. I love your jeweled gloves too, they are pretty fabulous. I definitely can not wait to see the rest of your photos!
Also, why not just rent skates? I’ve only been ice skating once in recent memory, but I did like the location and have been thinking about returning, just not sure who I’d go with.

  3. I was so intrigued by this place when I saw a sneak peek via your insta stories. SO stunning! And I love all the white + how lovely the sun came out for you guys!! <3 And skating?! Oooh one of my fave pastimes… haven't been in ages, but always so fun, and I'm loving your winter spirit. We're hoping to get out and start exploring a little more too (once Martin's weekend acting workshops are done) and visiting some of the nearby mountains. Perfect now that we a 4 wheel drive, should do a lot better in the snow than our civic. Hope your week is off to a great start Cee! xo

  6. Wow! These photos look like they’re out of a magazine. I think if we had something like this in Chicago, I would may (just maybe) have a slightly better attitude about winter. I’m glad you got even more shots. I can’t wait to see them all!

The ice castles are scary, makes me thing how beautiful and deadly nature can be!
