When I was growing up, matching was a kind of fashion kiss of death, the same as wearing tapered jeans – I can’t help but laugh when I think of how things change. Of course wearing black with black wouldn’t have resulted in a fashion faux pas, but toenails and fingernails painted the same colour was a no-no; to purchase shoes and a handbag from the same designer, in the same colour, and wear them at the same time would have, at best, been seen as quirky, but was generally taken as a sign that your fashion sense was hopelessly passe. “That’s just too matchy matchy,” I remember my best friend, who took these rules to heart, telling me. I’m sure I nodded in agreement at the time, but these kinds of fashion “rules” always baffled me, particularly the one about shoes and handbags. I never feel quite right carrying a black handbag while wearing grey shoes. I love my outfits to be put together – if they can look effortless at the same time, that’s a bonus, but I hate to leave home feeling like I just threw on clothes that were on top of the pile of fresh laundry I meant to put away a week ago. Prints are outside of my sartorial comfort zone at the best of times and, until recently, I would never have dreamed of wearing the same one head-to-toe. But then I fell hard for this printed skirt from NBD, and when I saw the matching top, I knew I had to go for it. Little did I know, this kind of look is exactly what my matchy matchy heart has always desired – I felt put together, coordinated, even elegant, all while seriously pushing the boundaries of what I am comfortable wearing. And it wasn’t just me; I went straight from these photos to drinks with friends and my look was met with rave reviews. I’m won’t go so far as to say that this is a new beginning for me and I want to add a lot of prints to my wardrobe – that would be a lie. But I did feel distinctly comfortable in this one, which is pretty major for me. And if you’re already a print lover, you’ll want to pop by REVOLVE between tomorrow and Thursday, when these pieces – and everything else on the site – will be 15% off when you use the code TAKE15!

The purse and shoes thing always threw me off and I flagrantly disobey it now (the same goes for accessories, I find myself always wanting them to go with my purse and shoes).

I can’t remember exactly when matchy-matchy became a faux pas, but I know it was sometime after 5th grade, because I wore blue floral twinset in my school picture that year and felt pretty amazing about it.

Presently, I think I would be delighted to wear a matching skirt and top, honestly it looks like a dress, and who could complain about that?

While I still don’t like my fingers and toes to match, I do kind of like my shoes and my bag to.

  3. I actually thought this outfit was a dress at first! That’s how perfectly the separates look paired together. This is the kind of matchy matchy I can definitely get behind. You look stunning.

  6. Cee, I absolutely adore this outfit! It looks so good on you. I love the pattern. I’ve always matched. HaHaHa But I’ve always broken the rules in fashion. It’s funny how things change.

  7. I’m loving this trend, I’ve spotted several two-piece romper sets which I love and you’re definitley convincing me to try this look for myself. Seriously gorgeous, Cee!! And, thank you for hosting such a lovely evening last night — I could have gabbed into the wee hours + we should seriously consider our American tour idea. Hehe! 😉
