I made a feeble joke on instagram yesterday, because I came home after a week in Vancouver and woke up sick, so feeble jokes are all I’m capable of at the moment. The joke was about spring fashion. Because while I’m watching everyone around me showcase their lovely new floral prints and pale pinks, no amount of positive thinking can change reality. I live in Winnipeg. March twenty-first may be the first day of spring, but here, it’s only the first day of spring on the calendar. The air outside is cold. There is snow on the ground. And while melting has begun, again and again, in the last month, it has been followed by another snowfall each time.

I have tried to think spring. I have tried to tell myself that if the opportunity to take photos arises, I should just take it – the cold won’t be that bad. But positive thinking isn’t all its cracked up to be, at least when it comes to the weather. It is relatively warm here today. It was also relatively warm the day before we took these photos… and yet, when we woke up on the day we actually shot them, the temperature had dipped back down to minus eighteen celsius.

Let’s just say, it’s a good thing that I love coats, because I won’t be putting my winter wear away anytime soon.

I knew to expect the cold when we moved home. Frankly, after a warm, rainy week in Vancouver, I was a little relieved to come back to it. After all, it’s easy to get dressed in Winnipeg. Between October and May, it’s never a question of whether it will be cold out, just of how cold it will be. It’s not ideal for taking outfit photos, its true. But otherwise, most of the time, I don’t mind as much as I thought I did. I’ll take a brisk wind over a downpour any day. That said, it will probably still be a while before I start sharing spring outfits.

If I sound a bit cynical, it’s probably because I am. I’ll be the first to admit it. But I committed to myself that I would share what I’m really wearing starting this year, and I intend to stick to it. Which is to say that there are more outfits with coats on the way. Because no matter how positively I think, right now I still have to put one on when I go outside.

I love that you are committed to sharing real outfits, even if the rest of the world had decided it’s spring and will dress accordingly, no matter what. I know it’s silly to care, but it kind of irritates me when I see bloggers, say, in my own state, wearing a summer dress and sandals while there is still visible snow on the ground. Who are they trying to fool? What are they trying to prove? I’d much rather see inspiring looks I can in fact wear right now while it’s still cold out. Which it is. Even though we got one nice day, we’ve reverted back to the slow climb to warmer days.

I am so sick of all the wet and snowy weather we’ve been getting in Alberta. It’s just grim. I want to start going for walks in the evening with Eleanor and the ugly weather is just making it impossible – it’s enough to make even me start to get frustrated with winter.

  4. Oh Vancouver rain, it’s no easy thing is it?! I’m always happy that I no longer commute when we have our downpour days, no thank you, even Scout’s not a fan. Haha! And I must say, you make winter look so incredibly chic Cee… your hat is so perfectly paired with your Zara coat, and yay, your Gucci bag is making it’s debut. I’m currently lusting after the Gucci marmont bag and surprised we never found it at Nordstroms (that was SUCH a fun day BTW). Oh well, next time! For now I have my Madewell tote and I’m so happy with it. Wishing you a wonderful week + hope you feel better soon. Boo to colds!! xo

You do make winter wear so fashionable!
It’s the same living in London – you know it’s going to be cold most of the time so it’s easy to get dressed. We did just have a 4 day heatwave though (it’s going to be cold again from tomorrow) and it made all the difference on everyone’s mood.

  6. We don’t seem to be having true seasons anymore Cee. It’s sad. You have to wait to wear Spring/Summer items, because the surroundings just don’t fit it. Same for Winter.
