I admit it – I was totally tempted to put together a sixties style outfit for this shoot from the second I walked into The Burrard Hotel. I still love dressing to suit my surroundings, but the result of that is that I often feel like I’m in costume. So I stuck to my guns and wore the outfit I planned, which is decidedly modern.

My thoughts and opinions have always been modern. (In fact, many of them border on controversial, which you probably know if you’ve been here for a while.) But I’ve never considered my style especially modern. I love new clothes but I work with a relatively average budget and I’m not a great sale shopper; I want what I want, not just what’s discounted. So I prefer to buy clothes I know I’ll be able to wear season after season. Plus, let’s face it – I just love a good sweater and a well-cut pair of jeans. The combination never fails me. I suppose I’m classic girl at heart.

But as I step away from costume-style dressing and fully embrace wearing what I’m comfortable in, I crave a modern take on my classic uniform. I feel compelled to layer pieces that aren’t meant to be layered, like t-shirts and cropped sweaters. I hem almost all of my jeans with a pair of scissors, to a length somewhere between what’s on trend and what seems to work best with my favourite boots. Because why not? I constantly push the boundary on what constitutes too oversized – my favourite sweater falls to my knees when I don’t tuck it in. I’m still wearing the same clothes. But the way I wear them is changing.

It’s funny. I started costume-dressing because I felt like my jeans and sweaters weren’t interesting enough. But it’s only since I’ve given up choosing clothes to suit my surroundings that I’ve started to truly understand and explore the potential for variation in my existing wardrobe. I don’t always look like I belong anymore. But since I’m not a character in a play, that doesn’t really matter. My attitude has changed from, If it comes in black or white, I’ll wear it. It isn’t that simple – I don’t love every black piece of clothing in the world. I feel so much better in my clothes now, and I’m having fun injecting a bit of a modern edge into my classic outfits, too.

I still can’t come up with the right adjective to define my style – I’m not sure there is one. But I chose a modern outfit for our vintage hotel shoot at The Burrard, and I have no regrets.

How do you define your style?

I love this take on the jeans and sweater uniform thing – it’s definitely modern and, more importantly, just really fun. And you are so right about not all pieces of black clothing being created equal – I’m working on being a bit more discerning with the black pieces that I buy so that I can find pieces I truly like and that truly fit me…and basically just make me feel my best.

  2. First of all, I LOVE this outfit Cee and I’d wear it in a heart-beat + I’m right there with you… these days my blog & style is all about how I dress rather than dressing for a location, or mood. While admittedly, I do love those shoots from time-to-time, they’ve become a rare thing on G&C and I’d rather focus on everyday looks. Quite honestly, I’m finding that far more interesting + relatable as a content creator and blog reader. So keep doing what you’re doing – loving your outfits and love seeing your style evolve. Happy Friday!!! xo

These pictures came out great! The setting of the hotel is so perfect.

It’s great that you’re having more fun with your style – that’s exactly what fashion is about. I’ve started injecting a statement piece into looks if I want to be more adventurous: a colourful a pair of shoes on an all black outfit or a fun piece of jewellery.

The desire to dress to my surroundings is generally my guiding force. For this hotel I would have pulled out the coordinating colors or a print – because as much as I’d like to imagine myself as someone who embraces basics, I have a closet full of color, and I’m always adding more. Though I will say I’m envious of your ability to feel comfortable and confident in whatever you’ve chosen from your closet.

Fab look and inspiring entourage… I have to admit I do not have a static style, I like to think its evolving but always with a classic vibe.

  6. I love black & white clothes. You can easily mix n match them. They always look great.
