Location: Sonder Paseo de Gracia – Barcelona, Spain

We took the train from Valencia to Barcelona on our wedding anniversary. The city, where we arrived in the mid-afternoon, was a fitting place to celebrate. We’ve visited twice before, first on the European adventure that ended with our engagement in Paris, and then again years later, when we were living in Paris. The city, at least the centre of it, is one we know well and can navigate easily. From the train station, we hopped on the subway and made it to the Paseo de Gracia, the main street in Barcelona, in minutes.

To celebrate our anniversary, we took a walk, then enjoyed tapas at El Nacional – because it doesn’t matter how many times you’ve eaten patatas bravas on a trip to Spain, ordering them again is always the right decision. Afterward, we returned to the Sonder where we were staying, to drink cava on the rooftop terrace and watch the sunset. We captured these snapshots while we were up there. It was so picturesque, we really couldn’t resist.

Neither one of us is particularly sentimental about things like our wedding anniversary. We’d been together for years before we got married, and although we had a wonderful party, the marriage itself didn’t change anything about our life together. With that said, though, we’re always happy to celebrate for any reason at all; an anniversary is as good as any other occasion. And if you have something to celebrate, Barcelona is beautiful place to do it – the weather is warm and sunny, the vibe is relaxed and the views, if you’re lucky enough to get them, can be truly spectacular.

The sun slipped away quickly, on this evening – it was early September, after all. And when it did, we went back to our room, where we collapsed into bed. We had a big morning ahead of us the next day. But this evening, and our anniversary celebration, set the tone for our stay in Barcelona. What a beautiful start it was, truly.
