The Exchange District

Winnipeg is an older city than Vancouver, with a very different history. My hometown was, in its heyday, a wealthy metropolis, the third largest city in the country. When the Panama Canal opened in 1914, international trade changed dramatically and so did Winnipeg’s fortunes – newer cities further west quickly surpassed it both in size and prosperity. But there are still parts of Winnipeg where you can see hints of its former glory; bank offices carved in ornate marble, the bronze statue that glints in the sun on top of the legislative building and the Exchange District, an entire neighbourhood of vintage brick and frosted glass. We took these photos on Alexander Street in the Exchange District last Saturday. I wanted a simple but striking background that would highlight my first maxi dress in years, from Boutique Onze, and Alexander Street, with its old brick factory buildings that somehow remain utterly unchanged, year after year, proved to be the perfect spot.

Winnipeg est plus vieille que Vancouver, avec une histoire différente. Ma ville natale fut, pendant son apogée, une métropole riche, la troisième plus grande ville au Canada. Lors de l’ouverture du canal du Panamá en 1914, Winnipeg a perdu son importance en commerce international – des nouvelles villes à l’ouest l’ont vite dépassé en grandeur ainsi qu’en prospérité. Cependant, il existe toujours des coins de Winnipeg où les traces de son ancienne gloire s’y voient facilement; des banques construites en marbre orné, une statue en bronze au sommet du palais législatif et l’échange District, un quartier entier en brique et verre dépoli, style rétro. Nous avons pris ces photos dans la rue Alexander de ce quartier le samedi passé. J’envisageais un cadre simple mais saisissant qui mettrait l’accent sur ma première robe maxi depuis longtemps, de Boutique Onze, et la rue Alexander, avec ses anciennes usines qui demeurent inchangées malgré le passage du temps, s’est avérée parfaite.
