Birthdays are a funny thing. I’ve always found my birthday a bit stressful, not because of the growing older thing – although admittedly I don’t always love that – but because of the parties. By the time I was fourteen, a feeling of creeping dread would come over me at the beginning of September when the school year began and I had to start considering who would be on the guest list for my birthday party three weeks later. I successfully avoided birthday parties for most of my twenties, celebrating only my twenty-fifth. Most years, I plan to be out of the country when my birthday rolls around, which has proven to be a pretty effective strategy – although Ian and Topher did surprise me with a party for my thirtieth birthday, which was lovely, because they took care of everything. When you don’t have to plan your own party, birthdays are a breeze! I’m much more interested in celebrating my friends than myself anyway, so when Lyndi’s thirtieth birthday came around a little more than six months after mine, I offered to host a celebratory get-together for her at the Loden Hotel. We’re so spoiled with fabulous hotels here in Vancouver, but the Loden is high on my list of favourites; the decor is West Coast classic with a twist (and the room we were in had the most fabulous pink velour couch that sadly doesn’t appear in any of these photos – it was a dream!) The service is exceptional and their French-inspired restaurant, Tableau, is a serious guilty pleasure for me as a former Parisian. When you’re a fashion blogger, every occasion is a good excuse for a photoshoot, so before the guests arrived, Lyndi and I posed for a few shots in our party outfits; all of the party decorations were blue, including the balloons – because of course there had to be balloons – so we kept with the theme in blue ensembles from Club Monaco’s summer collection (which, by the way, is killing me right now… fingers crossed I win the lottery soon so I can buy all of it) and lace-up sandals from Town Shoes. We drank champagne through paper straws, which was as fun as it was messy; ate delicious treats and had lots of laughs. I’m not always a fan of birthdays, but I have to admit that so far, my thirties have been a lot more fun than my twenties were – and I think Lyndi feels the same way!

How nice of you ! and like you, I am a bit iffy about birthdays. Last one I celebrated was 30, with a White Party.
I also have more fun planning someone else´s party than my own.

  2. I’ve been so curious to visit the Loden and this is making me even more so! Can’t wait to hear more about it on Monday, which is so soon. Yay, yay! And I’m with you on Birthdays, in fact, I have one coming up next week-ish and all I’ve come up with is… a coffee date with Martin and then taking Scout down to the Pier for a walk & ice-cream. I’m such a party animal! 😉 Anyway, I digress, you’re both looking lovely as ever AND I’m enamored with both outfits!! xo

You could not be more right – planning your own party is no fun. Planning for others is great, and having someone else throw you one is the best! It’s your day after all, where is the fun in stressing about cleaning the house and cooking food? (if you are me, because I love to have parties at home).

  4. So nice Cee! You’re a wonderful friend! Sipping champagne through straws sounds like my kind of birthday. Both of you looked exquisite. Loved these shots.
