When I was fourteen, my aunt came to visit from Mexico and brought suitcases full of old clothes with her, which, much to my mom’s chagrin, she gave to me. I didn’t know my aunt well – her visits were infrequent and rarely planned in advance – but in the world I inhabited, where moms wore tapered jeans and sweatshirts like they were a uniform, she seemed glamourous. There is nothing like sifting through someone’s old clothes to change your perspective on who they are as a person – I’ve never quite been able to look at my aunt the same way since I unfolded a pair of see through lace bellbottoms tie-dyed green, blue and purple. The woman who looked beautiful in photos was trying to recapture lost youth through her wardrobe; she was an attention seeker and, probably, more than a bit desperate. I took very few hand-me-downs from her. This is my very roundabout way of saying that I wasn’t sure about the block heel trend when it came around again, because the shoes my aunt brought, which were several sizes too big for me, anyway, were almost exclusively block heels – all of the best late 90s styles were represented, from strappy slides to delicate sandals. When I saw block heel sandals in Zara this summer, the memories of those suitcases full of unwanted things came back to me, and I walked away quickly. But everything changed when I was browsing REVOLVE – I know, I know, it’s a problem – and I spied this pair of block heels that are much less late 90s, and much more like the shoes I wore for character dance classes (which, as I type it, I realize sounds totally absurd, but if you’ve ever been enrolled in a ballet school, you probably know what I mean.) These beauties are infinitely more glamourous (and way less scuffed) than my character shoes ever were, though, while being just as comfortable. I’ve been calling them my tango shoes, since I’m still not entirely on board with the resurgence of the 90s block heel. Where do you stand on the block heel trend – did you wear them the first time around? And now that they’re back, are you adding them to your wardrobe?

  1. I’ve personally always been a fan of block heels and they’ve never gone out of fashion for me – so this current trend is all very exciting. Also, your aunt’s whack-a-do pants sound pretty amazing…

I won’t object to the block heel, a little more stability and comfort is always welcome in my life. I can relate to the aunt hand-me-downs, though it was my best friends aunt and not my own! Things that were a little bit zany, and not really my style, but I recognized the Designer names and wore them anyway!

They do look like character shoes! (But much more stylish…) I don’t do heels very often anymore (and rarely outside of weddings or New Years Eve), but I think I like this trend. You certainly make it look chic!

Cee, the ones you’re wearing are definitely more sophisticated! LOL I remember them and wasn’t a big fan. I love yours! Loving the story behind the story. Your aunt sounded just like my aunt. She was colorful! HaHaHa I love your coat as well.

  5. Too funny about your Aunt (mine were all so conservative)! As for the block heel trend?! Right there with you, I haven’t really been into them for similar reasons, but they’re slowly starting to grow on me, and yours are proof that they can be fab-u-lous!! Totally modern, classic and perfect with this outfit! I just might have to nab a pair!! xo
