Winter boots. Where do I begin? I’ve turned my nose up at all practical winter footwear since I was old enough to have an opinion on footwear of any kind. Growing up in Winnipeg, where temperatures regularly dip below minus forty degrees celsius, I wore my snow boots only under duress – “My feet never stay warm, anyway!” was my near perpetual protest, and it was true. In Vancouver, it’s easier to get away with wearing regular shoes all year long and so, for the first several years I lived here, that’s exactly what I did. So, what changed? The answer is two-fold. First of all, after years of gymnastics and ballet and running, so much running, my feet aren’t exactly happy campers at the best of times. I love my heels, but a lot of the time, and particularly the day after a long run, my feet aren’t having any of it. And so my arsenal of comfortable shoes has grown to include Birkenstocks and Adidas Stan Smith sneakers. I told myself that I could go back to my beloved high heeled ankle boots in the winter, but by the time winter came this year, I realised just how much faster I was getting around in my flat practical shoes. I’m always loathe to describe myself is busy, but seriously, if we could add three hours to every day, I would be thrilled. It’s way too cold for Birkenstocks at this time of year, and my Adidas don’t do a very good job of keep my feet dry. Enter the most comfortable winter boot I’ve ever come across: the Ukiuk from Ecco. I admit that the style of the boot had me a bit skeptical at first – I mean, there’s no denying how practical they are, but stylish? I won’t lie, I had my doubts. I was sold either way – warmth and comfort-wise, they just can’t be beaten. And since I’m a mature adult, I tell myself (sometimes repeatedly, because the more I tell myself something, the more true it seems,) I can wear comfortable shoes without caring if strangers think I look like a dork. But the truth is, when I slipped my Ukiuks on over my skinny jeans and put on my leather jacket, all thoughts of looking silly were officially banished – these boots are cute. And they feel like walking on clouds. So, win-win. I’ve been wearing mine all over, especially on weekends, from morning coffee at Bel Cafe to Christmas shopping at Nordstrom to stops at the Art Gallery with Topher to guess what the latest outdoor sculpture is supposed to mean (we’ve been playing this game for the better part of six months and somehow, we seem to be getting worse, but either way, it’s hilarious.) They’ve officially become part of my world.

I know what you mean Cee! I live in a warm climate and it’s hard getting me into boots. Those look comfortable & stylish. Sometimes we just have to do what makes our feet HAPPY 😀

I always find winter boots tricky as well because they always seem so un-stylish to me – but these are really cute (and they look really cozy and comfy). Yeah, you may have found the perfect winter boot!

They say that heels can be empowering, but sometimes getting where you need to go with warm happy feet is a whole new and wonderful kind of empowering. I used to only own comfortable shoes, but then as I got older I decided that sacrifices would be made to look cute and now there are pretty much no comfort shoes in my closet. Even as they try and try to bridge the gap between cute and comfortable I fear their will always be a divide. Of course I think your boots look as cute as a comfortable boot can, and with your fun pom hat and sleek leather jacket, it’s hard to go wrong.

  5. Oooh, I LOVE this outfit and I LOVE these holiday-esque photos. So darling + you look absolutely gorgeous, Cee!! <3 As for practical footwear? I've honestly gotten worse with age, haha, but I'm trying to get better, and these shoes are absolutely swaying me in the right direction! Hope your week is off to a fabulous start!! xo
