Since the year I was hired for my first insurance job at twenty-two, I have dreaded the office holiday party. The office holiday party equation is a unique one; take a group of people who see each other every day but know very little about each other apart, perhaps, from pen and paper preferences, add fancy dress and a lot of alcohol and, well, the result is really never the same twice. It’s been about two years since I left conventional office life behind and I have never been sorry to miss out on the annual office party. But for many people, including most of my friends, that party is very much a reality that they have no choice but to find a way to make as painless as possible – and hope to escape unscathed. (I’m exaggerating a bit but seriously, I never had a good office party experience.) And a big part of that is choosing the right outfit. Too often, people treat an office party like any other holiday party, but this is not the time for your favourite mini dress. When it comes to dressing for an office party, erring on the side of caution – and, quite frankly, bordering on the conservative – is always key. The occasion may be festive, but your bosses will still be in the room (and you’ll have to face them the following day at the office, too.) Take cues from the dress code your observe for work everyday, but don’t hesitate to mix in pieces that wouldn’t normally work for a day at the office, like this long satin midi skirt from Stylewe – the hemline keeps it business appropriate, but the fabric exudes glamour and sophistication. Some offices are more casual than others, of course – if you wear jeans to work on a daily basis, it might make sense to wear a simple sweater dress to the office party, but if your employer favours suits, ties and pencil skirts, you’ll want to embrace a more dressed up look for the holiday party, too. Whether you love or hate the office holiday party, tell me – how do you dress for the occasion?

Well if you had a office holiday party to attend you’r certainly look fabulous 🙂 We don’t have a holiday Christmas party. We have no celebrations at work.. so I think I might fancy one !

Office parties, when I actually worked at a place which had them, were never filled with anything more than mundane. We left work early, wearing whatever we wore to work that day, had a meal, and went home. It was nice to leave work early, and that’s about the extent of it. I’m sure it might be different for larger corporations or places where you aren’t the youngest employee by 20 years.

Anyway, I think your satin mid skirt is the perfect amount of elegance for any holiday party, be it office or otherwise, and you can never go wrong with a bit of chanel.

  4. I’ve never really had to navigate the intricacies of the office holiday party (thankfully) as, when I worked in an office that really had a big one, I fortuitously took vacation right during the week and, now that I work in a small, tight-knit office of 6 people and I am the boss, we all just go out for dinner after work. I’m actually really happy that I’ve never really participated in a proper office party!

  5. Luckily, I’ve always been close to my co-workers/management, and as such, have always looked forward to our office parties. Rare, I know! As for attire? Your advice is so sound & fabulous… and if I was attending an office party this year?! I’d be wearing exactly this. Your outfit is flawless and I couldn’t love it more!! Happiest Friday, pally! xo

Ah yes, the office party is always an experience. I’ve always worked in huge companies, where everyone gets really dressed up and parties the night away. However I’m working somewhere smaller now and we have a nice dinner planned for the Christmas party, so I’m struggling with outfit choices. This look amazing. I love your skirt here so much.

  8. I’m not a fan of them myself. I’ve always gone down the route of smart casual to something like this. You don’t want to be overly dressy but you also want to look like you made an effort!
