Somewhere in my heart of hearts, I must be a colour lover. Seriously. For years, there was nothing that tempted me more than a beautiful new eyeshadow palette. I bought them one after the other, no matter how outlandish the shades – royal blue, emerald green, peacock… their beauty sucked me in every time. But every time, they languished in my make-up bag, unused, because I am not adventurous with my make-up. I really don’t wear colour. Especially on my eyes. These days, it’s rare that I buy a new eyeshadow palette. I want one, and only one, that can do it all. And I want one where I use every shade more or less equally.

I’ve been dedicated to Urban Decay’s Naked Basics for years, but it was recently discontinued. I don’t love the available alternative from the brand nearly as much, so I=tt was time to take a leap on something new. I got lucky on my first try, falling head over heels for the Beautycounter Velvet Eyeshadow Palette in classic.

What it is: A nine-eyeshadow palette made up of warm neutral shades in both matte and satin finishes, with one glitter shadow for nights out on the town – or anytime a little sparkle strikes your fancy. The velvet formula is made with Butterpowder and triple-milled. That ensures precision, colour payoff and long-lasting coverage.

What to do with it:
Create a simple everyday make-up look using the softer shades, or amp up the colour with rich brown and bold cranberry shades. This palette isn’t reinventing the wheel – you use it like any other set of eyeshadows, combining and blending shades to suit your mood.

What it costs: $62 for 7.47 grams

Why it’s fabulous: A good warm-toned neutral eyeshadow palette can be hard to find. I’ve used cool-toned shades for years, and I love that this palette mixes that up while keeping me firmly in my mostly colour-free comfort zone. I am especially smitten with Ivory, a shimmery golden-white shade. For a perfect effortless look, it’s all you need on your lids. But it also layers beautifully with Suede, Sahara, Cinnamon and Sable. And although the palette is technically neutral, there is a lot of shade variation. I’m still experimenting with the pink-toned shades. But so far, those experiments are yielding lovely results.

That Urban Decay palette was my go to for years and I am so bitter that it’s discontinued. I’ve been using a Smashbox one with lots of browns and earthy tones in it but it also includes a pale pink and a grey shade and I am just never going to use those. I definitely prefer a tan and browns palette and then if I’m craving a splash of colour I buy a pot of a Color Pop shade (their red is a particular favourite). All of which is to say that I need to try this one out.

  3. Sooo sad the Urban Decay palette was discontinued it was such a good one!! I always feel quite disheartened when my fave products don’t continue on… my go-to Chanel shadow has also been discontinued and I don’t know what I’ll do when I run out. Sigh! As for your newly discovered palette? It’s gorgeous and I can’t wait to try it. Also loving these photos so much Cee. Such beautiful styling!! Can’t wait for our Skype date. Countdown is on!!! xo

  4. You look absolutely gorgeous! I tend to only use the same color on my lids and have been on the lookout for a great palette. Maybe I’ll give this one a try.

I know that feeling, seeing those colors on the pallet and just needing it, even though my attempts at wearing blue and purple were ill-fated. There was perhaps a brief period of time when I thought I was pull it off too.
But like you, when it comes to makeup, I know neutral and natural is by and large the best.
