The words beach baby have never been used to describe me. While I know how to swim, I’m not big on swimming, or even getting my feet wet… not to mention that I’m terrified of oceans and more much more enthused about lakes. The number of times I’ve appeared on a beach in this space in the past decade amounts to exactly four – including these photos. (See exhibits A, B and C, if you’re interested.)

But, this year, fearing that we would likely not be able to travel much further than outside our own city, we decided to join in on a family beach holiday. After two days surrounded by nature, my allergies kicked in and I was utterly miserable. Up to that point, though, it wasn’t too bad. There was sun. There was sand. And there was one pretty magical sunset, which we managed to capture in photos. (More on that next week!)

The truth is, though, I’m just not a beach baby. I’m not even sure I could say I like the beach. When faced with the choice between sun and sand and a city, I’ll choose the city everytime. While I love sunny days, I prefer to spend them surrounded by beautiful architecture, charming cafes and an array of art museums. I’m really hoping that’s exactly how our trip to Paris this fall will be – it’s now officially a month away and so far, it seems, still happening. Keep your fingers crossed for us! After almost two years at home, most of that time spend working with no real break, we’re in desperate need of a vacation – and for me, a couple of days at the beach just doesn’t cut it. Although sand, it turns out, really is my colour.

I have also never been a beach person. I’m pretty sure I ruined many a family vacation to Hawaii with my non-enthusiasm about being at the beach. One more item on the list of the many things I’ve done to irritate my parents, ha ha.
